Vice-President (post vacant following the passing of Dr Alfredo Mantici)

Alfredo Mantici

Alfredo Mantici

After graduating in medicine, he attended the Naval Academy of Livorno as a Naval Officer Cadet, serving in that branch in 1976-1977. In 1979 he joined SISDE, where over the years he held numerous prominent posts. He worked in the Analysis and Documentation Division, initially as Director of the Analysis and Studies Section, then as Deputy Director and subsequently as Director of the Division itself. He was also Deputy Director of the Foreign Relations Division. From 1997 to 2000 he directed the Diversified Counter-Threat and the Economic and Industrial Counter-Threat Divisions, until his appointment as Head of the Service's Training School. In 2002 he was appointed Head of the Strategic Analysis Department and, from 2004 to 2007, he also served as managing editor of the Service's journal, Gnosis. In 2008 he was called to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers as Adviser and Technical Secretary of the High Isolation Commission, tasked with managing the risk of bioterrorism and epidemic emergencies. He left that post in October of the same year following his appointment as Director General of the Anthropogenic Risks Office of the National Civil Protection Department. From 2009 to 2010 he was a member of the National Committee for Biotechnology and Bioterrorism at the Presidency of the Council. He taught at the University of Calabria and at the Link Campus University of Rome. He was Head of Analysis of the online magazine Oltrefrontiera News and, between 2010 and 2011, served as Deputy Head of the Cabinet Office of the City of Rome. From 2012 to 2017 he was editorial director of Lookout News. On 24 November 2023 he passed away suddenly following a fatal seizure while driving his car on Via Aurelia. His passing left a profound sense of emptiness in all those who had come to know his expertise, his intellectual rigour and his constant commitment to the service of the institutions and of information.
